Room 14 went to the Suter Art Gallery to see 'The Wreck of the Delaware'. This a great installation by Sally Burton that tells the story of a shipwreck that happened in 1863. The 'Delaware' crashed into rocks just off Whakapuaka. Huia Matenga, her husband and friends saw the shipwreck and swam into the sea to help the crew. They saved the lives of all the crew but one.
Esther shows us a Lindauer portait of the heroine, Huria Matenga.
We sketched our own portraits using shading.
We were really interested to learn about all of the people that were involved in this event in Nelson's history.
