SHOULD FIREWORKS BE BANNED?

We are learning to write an argument.
Should fireworks be banned? What do you think?

DANGEROUS FIREWORKS:

I think all fireworks should be banned.

I think this because some people are scared of fireworks. The sound might scare them or even how big the fireworks are. The noise scares animals so they might run away.

The smoke from the fireworks is bad for the environment so it could poke a big hole in the ozone layer.

Some people are not sensible with the fireworks. Some animals get killed because of this. Things could get destroyed. People could get burnt and fires could start.

I still think fireworks could be fun if silly people weren’t silly with fireworks.

That is why I think fireworks should be banned.

I think this because fireworks are really fun to watch. They are really exciting.

Families get to spend some time together when fireworks are on. People also get to have fireworks for other occasions like New Year.

Sometimes fireworks can scare animals away but fireworks are still fun if people aren’t silly with them.

I reckon everyone should be allowed fireworks.

Riley BAD FIREWORKS:

I think fireworks should be banned.

I think this because animals and some people can get hurt if they are too close to the fireworks. Fires can happen if the fireworks hit plants.

Some people can be scared of fireworks when they explode. Noises can scare animals when the fireworks hit the sky.

That is why I think fireworks should be banned.

Fireworks are really cool because they are colourful. People can watch fireworks in public displays where the fireworks won’t burn trees.

It is nice to watch fireworks. They are cooler than going out for dinner. Fireworks glow and look cool. They glow when they explode.

That is why I think fireworks should not be banned.

CAMP 2010

We had a fantastic time at Teapot Valley for our 2010 camp. A big thanks to all of the parents and teachers that made this camp so great!

Dear Jo,

Thank you for coming to camp. I really liked going on the waterslide and swimming pool. When we went in the swimming pool if was so cold that I jumped out of it! When I went on the waterslide it was so fast that I nearly went up to the top.

When we did the Top Team games we did all sorts of activities. My favourite activity was going on the mini jeeps. I went with Ella. I nearly banged a cone down and I did. Ella did too. It was really funny but the mini jeep broke down so we couldn’t keep riding on it.

After that we went in the big maze. It was huge. Some people got trapped in it. Then we had some food, it was delicious. There was some cake and fruit. We had to have one of those.

When it was getting dark we did the concert. Me, Ella, Torfun and Halie-Rose did a skit, it took a while. At the very end we went possum hunting. It was very dark so we had to use out torches. I only found one possum.

Thanks again, I had a great time!

Dear Sue,

Thank you for organising camp. I really enjoyed the waterslide because people went down really fast. I also liked the mini jeeps because we got to go around the cones really fast. I also really liked the trampoline, it was very bouncy.

The huge maze was awesome because we got to play hide and seek. The cool swimming pool was freezing! Ed’s Alley was cool because we got to knock other people’s balls over into the hole. The possum hunt was awesome because we got to swap the possums for lollies.

In the morning we got to do Top Team games. They were really fun because we got points.

Thanks again for organising camp.

ALL CHILDREN SHOULD HAVE TO WEAR HATS IN THE SUN

We are learning to write an argument.
Our argument should have:
* Introduction - stating our point of view
* Reasons justifying our point of view
* Conclusion - restating our point of view

I think that all children should have to wear a hat when they go outside.

I think this because sun can really hurt children if they get sunburnt, which can cause skin cancer.

If children wear their hats at school they get to play in more areas.

That is why I think children should wear hats when they are outside in the sun.

VIOLIN SPECTACULAR

Tim has been learning the violin this year and Room 14 were lucky enough to go to a performance to see Tim in action. Maya, Grace, Holly, Eliza and Tim showed us the amazing work they have been doing with Tanya.
Well done, you guys rock!

IMPORTANT: The violin group will be busking at the Saturday market tomorrow to raise money for people affected by the Canterbury Quake. I am sure they would appreciate your support!

INVESTIGATION INTO SOUND

As part of our Inquiry unit investigating SOUND Room 14 made string telephones and discovered how they work...

PROCEDURAL WRITING: HOW TO MAKE A STRING TELEPHONE

What you will need:
* String * Scissors
* 2 plastic cups * Metre ruler

Instructions:
First get the scissors and poke a tiny hole in the bottom of the two cups.

Measure the string and cut to four metres.

After that take the string and poke it through the hole in the bottom of the cup and tie a knot.

Next do the same with the other cup.

Last thing to do is wind it up and then you’re all done.

EXPLANATION: HOW A STRING TELEPHONE WORKS

The voice makes the plastic cup vibrate. When the plastic cup vibrates the sound waves cause the string to vibrate. The sound waves can travel through the string to the other cup.

The string needs to be tight for the sound waves to travel.

ROBYN BELTON VISITS

We were very excited to have Robyn Belton come to visit us. Robyn read us a new Greedy Cat story about a goldfish, it was funny.
After that Robyn ready us the story 'Herbert, the Brave Sea Dog'. It is such a great story with beautiful illustrations. Robyn drew us a picture of Herbert, we are very lucky because we get to keep this special picture.

THE HAPPY CAKE

Louis and his KIWI reading group read the story 'How to Make a Happy Cake'. Room 14 were very lucky because Louis went home and made a Happy Cake for us all to share!

SUTER ART GALLERY

On Tuesday Room 14 went to the Suter Art Gallery to see Paopao ki tua o rangi by Ngaahina Hohaia. The title means ‘beat to the rhythm’ and relates to the tradition of poi in Taranaki and Parihaka especially. The artist’s family comes from Parihaka and the installation projects images of historic photographs that represent the artist’s ancestors. The symbols that feature on the poi relate to the Parihaka community. We learned about the history of Parihaka and got to make our own poi. A big thank you to Esther and all of the wonderful parents that came with us.

NARRATIVE WRITING

WE ARE LEARNING TO CREATE NARRATIVE WRITING:

One evening last summer Jim and Debbie took a drive in their flash car. They were driving through the cold forest. Jim and Debbie kept on driving when suddenly a UFO appeared and landed on the road. Jim and Debbie got out of the car and hid behind a tree.

An alien popped out of the UFO and said “Bidy bidy bee.” Jim and Debbie were puzzled. They were thinking and thinking but they couldn’t work out what the alien was saying. Before they knew it the alien had pulled Jim and Debbie into the UFO. They drove off.

It was a long and bumpy ride. When they got there they were amazed. The alien said “Bidy bidy bee.” This meant ‘Come here’. Jim and Debbie followed the alien but then they saw they were going to jail.

Jim and Debbie were trying to get out of the jail but it wasn’t worth it. They stayed there for a week then Jim felt a brick, lots of the bricks moved. Jim and Debbie ran out and got an axe. They kept on running.

Jim and Debbie found a secret lab and got a flying saucer. They went into it and started the engine. They zoomed off and rushed back to earth.

FISHER'S LAST DAY

We were all very sad to say goodbye to Fisher at the end of Term 1. We had a FAREWELL PARTY. Fisher and his dad brought in some yummy cakes. THANKS!

We have been learning about the different ways animals can be grouped. We have been investigating insects.

OUR AMAZING BODIES

Before we started learning about the major organs in our body we drew around Arlo's amazing body. We had to decide where all of the major organs would go in the body. Some of them were pretty wild!

POHUTUKAWA SWIMMING CARNIVAL

THE BIG DAY

Last week on Thursday Room 14 had our swimming carnival. We got changed and ready for the carnival. When we got to the pool I was excited. We had to sit on our towel.

The races that I did were a kickboard race and an underwater race. The best one was the kickboard race because I won.

My family were there to watch me. They were very proud of me. I was so happy at the swimming carnival. I saw Mr Potaka and lots of parents came to the swimming carnival. When I got out of the pool I was freezing.

I can’t wait until its next year when it is the swimming carnival again.

FUN SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Last week on Thursday Room 14 had their swimming carnival. I went first in the starfish. When we did the piggyback race Lydia was my partner and then we shook hands underwater.

My favourite event was underwater swimming. I tried to hold my breath for longest. Other people bet me but I tried my hardest.

When I hopped out of the pool I felt freezing but then my mum and dad came to get me. I felt extraordinary.

I can not wait until next year’s swimming carnival.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Last week on Thursday Room 14 had the Pohutukawa Syndicate Swimming Carnival. I went in the starfish, over arm, underwater, kickboard, piggyback race and more.

I felt cold when I hopped out. We had to bring two towels because one was to sit on and one was to wrap yourself warm. I felt cold.

At the end some people wanted to have some free time. I want to have some free time next time. I want to have another swimming carnival whatever class I am in next year.

I like swimming. It’s super, super and super!

WRECK OF THE DELAWARE

Room 14 went to the Suter Art Gallery to see 'The Wreck of the Delaware'. This a great installation by Sally Burton that tells the story of a shipwreck that happened in 1863. The 'Delaware' crashed into rocks just off Whakapuaka. Huia Matenga, her husband and friends saw the shipwreck and swam into the sea to help the crew. They saved the lives of all the crew but one.

Esther shows us a Lindauer portait of the heroine, Huria Matenga.

We sketched our own portraits using shading.We were really interested to learn about all of the people that were involved in this event in Nelson's history.

INTERVIEWING DR HARBERT

On Monday Room 14 were lucky enough to have Fisher's mum come and talk to us about our Inquiry topic. Jen is a Doctor and she answered all of our questions about the human body.

We have had a very busy start to the school year. Our new theme for 2010 is ‘Explore, Dream, Discover.’

We have been having fun learning about the Human Body in our Inquiry topic ‘Our Amazing Bodies’.

This is Room 14 using our eLearning time to ACQUIRE information about different organs in the human body. We learned lots of cool stuff which we can’t wait to share with you!
